ELLIS Master PronunciationTM
Helping Students Hear a World of Difference
ELLIS Master PronunciationTM is the ideal solution for the speaking and auditory discrimination
difficulties that English learners face at all levels.
In spoken English, a small difference in sound can make a big difference in meaning. Compare
"yet" and "jet," for example. Visually and aurally, they're close, but the interpretation is miles
apart.
In spoken English, slight variations in sounds can present problems for ESL learners. Little
distinctions like these can pose big hurdles for native speakers of non-English languages. That's
because some sounds and sound combinations that occur commonly in English may occur rarely
or not at all in other languages. So if you have never heard a sound before, how can you begin to
hear it when it's spoken to you, and then go on to speak it properly yourself? That's because
sounds and sound combinations that occur commonly in English may rarely or never occur in
other languages. If you have never heard a sound before, how can you recognize it when it's
spoken to you, and then produce it properly yourself?
Based on the pronunciation tools in Intro, Middle, and Senior Mastery, ELLIS Master
Pronunciation TM is the ideal solution to the speaking and listening comprehension difficulties
that all ESL learners face.
To understand spoken English, native speakers of other languages need to become aware of any
English phonemes that may be totally new to them. And they need special assistance and
practice to correctly understand and pronounce words containing these new sounds.
Master Pronunciation lets you see how sounds are formed with video models. For even greater
detail, ELLIS provides animated graphics that illustrate where to place the tongue, teeth, and lips
to pronounce different sounds.
What's more, ELLIS lets students not only hear how words sound. It lets them see how the
sounds are formed.
For example, students can watch a video of a native speaker in profile showing how sounds are
formed. This is available for all sounds in the pronunciation model.
For even greater detail, ELLIS provides an "X-ray" feature that shows correct palatalization
involved in pronunciation. This animated graphic illustrates how to place the tongue, teeth and lips
to pronounce different sounds.
The pronunciation aids and practice drills that ELLIS provides help students speed their
acquisition of English speaking skills. It's a valuable addition to any ESL/EFL classroom or
learning center.
The Master Tutor takes this technology one step further. Learners can access instructions on
correct pronunciation for each sound in 28 languages. They can also record their voices for
comparison to male and female speakers. The Tutor draws direct comparisons between similar
sounds.
Learners can participate in thousands of mini-dialogues with Speech Acts. Topics include Asking
for Information, Giving and Accepting Complaints, and Expressing Opinions. Learners can
practice common phrases and learn appropriate responses in a variety of social settings.
Hundreds of hours of activities await learners in Speech Acts.
There are also over 2,500 minimal pairs that can be accessed by random or individual selection,
or by specific native-language background.
ELLIS is designed with unique sensitivity to these inherent language differences. The system
provides students with comprehensive tutoring in the phonemic distinctions between their native
languages and English via a technique called minimal pairs. "Y" and "j" sounds are a minimal pair
of concern for Japanese speaking students.
There are over 2,500 minimal pairs in the ELLIS system. Minimal pairs can be accessed
individually, by random selection or grouped by needs of specific native languages. The minimal
pairs feature of ELLIS presents students with coupled words. The words are displayed on the
screen in English text while the students hear one of the words spoken. Students may practice
pronunciation by recording and then comparing their voices with that of the model.
