ELLIS Middle MasteryTM
Language is More than Words
ELLIS Middle MasteryTM helps intermediate learners to integrate their new skills and improve
their ability to communicate in English
As any language instructor knows, a language is not learned by words alone. Proficiency is
gained by interacting with native speakers in real-life situations.
Translation, definition, spelling, grammar, memorization are all involved, of course. But to gain
fluency in hearing and speaking English, students need to use the words as they are spoken in
conversations.
ELLIS Middle Mastery teaches basic communication skills to intermediate learners from middle
school through higher education, as well as business, adult literacy and vocational training
programs.
Learners can take advantage of the unique role playing feature to interact with the dialogues
presented on the screen. ELLIS allows learners to select a character from any video segment and
assume that role in that scene. Role Play gives learners a chance to participate in authentic
situations in a nonthreatening way. Learners get involved, gain confidence, and simply have fun.
There are hundreds of role play scenarios ranging from job interviews to more casual social
situations. Each helps learners become more comfortable with colloquial English and to acquire
skills that are applicable to everyday interaction with native English speakers. And, each one
presents a wealth of opportunities for vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation practice at
beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.
In order to function day-to-day in a new country, students must be able to integrate all of their
language skills. ELLIS combines different types of activities that allow learners to utilize newly
acquired skills together. Both adults and younger learners can benefit from synthesis activities.
ESL classes generally contain a diverse collection of language backgrounds. ELLIS provides
native-language dictionaries which include conversational and contextual equivalents of words,
idiomatic phrases, cultural notes, and help throughout the program. These auto dictionaries are
available in dozens of languages. Access to these dictionaries are available in dozens of
languages. Access to these dictionaries is managed by the instructor.
Middle Mastery uses two powerful methods to teach grammar, including The Grammar Guide and
The Grammar Tutor. The Grammar Guide introduces the grammar structure and provides rules
and examples. The Grammar Tutor is an online tutorial that teaches by allowing self-paced
instruction, requiring active participation, and providing frequent corrective feedback. And finally, a
workbook filled with excellent writing activities allows learners to apply their grammar skills
outside the learning center.
For example, staying within a budget and shopping from a list require more than basic English
skills. In a visit to a grocery store, learners exercise math skills, knowledge of standard weights
and measurements, and cultural awareness.
