ELLIS IntroTM teaches basic English survival skills to beginning learners, including those who are
preliterate.

Watch, listen to, interact with, and learn from Bill, Olivia, their family and friends using natural
English in authentic situations. Choose from 35 Intro lessons which include topics like shopping,
using public trans-portation, and getting medical attention.

It's like watching a movie with one major exception: learners can be part of the action. They can
stop or repeat a scene and view the text of the scripts as they are acted out. If the native-speed
dialogue is too fast, they can slow it down. Carefully-enunciated audio allows learners to isolate
each phrase and hear it slowly. They can also record their own voices for comparison to those of
native speakers. Each of the thousands of lis-tening activities in ELLIS becomes a speaking
activity for the learner.

In addition, learners can look up definitions of words or phrases, study culture, practice their
pronunciation, and access grammar taught in each lesson.

ELLIS is flexible enough to give you your own personal learning experience. The innovative More
feature allows learners to pace their instruction. Click on More while studying any topic to access
more information--more vocabulary, grammar, culture, video, and pronunciation activities.

In addition to enhancing language skills, ELLIS helps ESL learners adapt to and understand the
culture, and deal with the common day-to-day challenges of being in a new country. Each lesson
contains textul and visual examples that provide insights into their new cultural environment.
Choose from American, Australian, Canadian, or British cultural content.

ELLIS programs are exceptionally easy to use. Getting help has never been easier. The
context-sensitive Help in Intro lets you click on any button to hear a description of what that
button does. With Native Language Help, you can even choose the language in which Help is
narrated. Plus, the on-line tutorial guides you through each screen and explains how to navigate
through the program. In short, ELLIS speaks your language.

ESL classes generally contain a diverse collection of language backgrounds. ELLIS provides
native-language dictionaries which include conversational and contextual equivalents of words,
idiomatic phrases, cultural notes, and help throughout the program. These auto dictionaries are
available in dozens of languages. Access to these dictionaries are available in dozens of

Intro uses two powerful methods to teach grammar, including The Grammar Guide and The
Grammar Tutor. The Grammar Guide introduces the grammar structure and provides rules and
examples. The Grammar Tutor is an online tutorial that teaches by allowing self-paced
instruction, requiring active participation, and providing frequent corrective feedback. And finally, a
workbook filled with excellent writing activities allows learners to apply their grammar skills
outside the learning center.

For example, staying within a budget and shopping from a list require more than basic English
skills. In a visit to a grocery store, learners exercise math skills, knowledge of standard weights
and measurements, and cultural awareness.
